Lemons, Limoncello, Limoni…

This is Giampiero’s hand, we were walking under a lemon tree and he picked it and took a bite (as you can see). I cringed just a little, but this was typical of him, when we strolled through any Villas gardens. We always make it a point to walk the property and I am always fascinated by the healthy fruit, vegetables & herbs. I often think how much my father would have loved to be here, he always tried to grow his fruit despite the frigid Philadelphia temperatures in winter. Nevertheless, one of the things that makes Italy such a desired destination is for their crops & fresh ingredients. Back to the Lemons! Yes they eat them, like we do an Apple. They are not so bitter and the very large Lemons are opened, sugared and ready to eat. The Italians find ways to incorporate lemons into their recipes. You’ll taste the citrus in the dishes, soups, desserts (especially in the lemon tarts and cakes), liquor (Limoncello), which is probably the most famous and favored use of lemons!
