    Trattoria Baita Belvedere, Bellagio

When you are driving alongside the road near the Lake it is without doubt a breathtaking view. You will come across roads that go up above the Lake. Being an adventurer, I like to rent a car and venture above the Lake. Nine years ago I took one of those roads behind Bellagio and saw a sign for a restaurant above the Lake called Trattoria Baia Belvedere. As I started going higher and higher, the views were breathtaking, the road became unpaved and I thought several times that I should turn back and head down to the Lake. I became nervous and anxious to see what was higher.  As we passed the roads, I was surprised to see farms and cows along the side of the roads. The homes as we rose above had fabulous views. Finally I saw a sign for the farm/restaurant and an unpaved road that took me higher. Finally I arrived at sunset. As I approached the unpaved parking lot there was a broken fence with about 5 very healthy but then cows. The grass was very green the air clean the sun was setting. As I approached the front door of this modest restaurant, I noticed several picnic tables with incredible views below. You could see Varenna in the lights. It was amazing.

The menu had homemade cheeses, jams, honey, salumi’s and pastas. There was local wine made at the farm. The prices were good and the portions large enough to share. It was such a memorable experience that I tell everyone they should visit and bring home jams and honey as I did. Since I have been there I learned there is a small transport bus that will take you back and forth up the steep hills to arrive. Please inquire with the restaurant.
